How many product photos does a Shopify product page need?

Four is typical

Nightjar looked at 1,000 Shopify stores and found the median store shows 4 photos per product (published October 2026). Nightjar sells AI product photography, so treat it as a vendor’s study, but it’s a useful benchmark.

Four is a floor, not a target. Add images until a shopper has nothing left to ask.

The shots that earn their place

1. The hero. The product on a plain background, front on. This is the image in your collection grid.
2. Another angle. The side or the back, especially if the back has a label.
3. A close-up. The label, the texture, the stitching: whatever proves the quality.
4. Scale or use. The product in a hand, on a shelf or in use, so the size is obvious.
5. What’s in the box. For sets and gifts, every item together.
6. A spin or a short video. For products people want to see all the way round.

Sizes Shopify recommends

From the Shopify Help Center:

• Square product images usually display best at 2048 by 2048 px.
• Product images can be up to 5000 by 5000 px, or 25 megapixels.
• Product and collection images must be smaller than 20 MB.

Keep every product in a collection the same shape, usually square, so the grid lines up.

Small things that help

• Name files after the product, like low-tide-barrier-cream-front.jpg, not IMG_4021.jpg.
• Write alt text that says what’s in the image, for shoppers using screen readers and for search.
• Use the same light and background across a collection, so products look like they belong together.
